The potential for <1 $/W MJ solar cell modules exists for III–V based devices if new technologies such as high-speed deposition, Si-based tandem solar cells, or the use of concentration are employed with high efficiency and manufacturability.
The operating principles of MJ solar cells were suggested by Jackson 9 as long ago as 1955, and they have been investigated since 1960. 10 This concept was most successfully implemented in III–V compound semiconductor solar cells, since a compound semiconductor has a good range of lattice parameters and bandgaps to choose from.
The below-bandgap loss is about 25% and the thermalization loss is about 29.8% for a material having a bandgap of 1.31 eV. The integration of plasmonic nanoparticles onto the cell's surface offers encouraging opportunities for light trapping, whereas multijunction solar cells demonstrate remarkable outcomes in terms of spectrum utilization.
SHJ solar cells not only have the advantages of high conversion efficiency and high open-circuit voltage, but also have a low temperature coefficient and free from potential induced degradation (PID). For SHJ solar cells, the passivation contact effect of the c-Si interface is the core of the entire cell manufacturing process.
The usual design of an a-Si:H solar cell is shown in Fig. 5d. In addition, the primary focus of research on the hydrogenated amorphous silicon germanium (a-SiGe:H) alloy is its narrow bandgap absorber function, to improve the stability of a-Si:H solar cells and the solar spectrum response at longer wavelengths (Yu et al., 2019a).

Solar Cell Structure
A solar cell is an electronic device which directly converts sunlight into electricity. Light shining on the solar cell produces both a current and a voltage to generate electric power. This process requires firstly, a material in which the absorption of light raises an electron to a higher energy state, and secondly, the movement of this higher energy electron from the solar cell into an ...
