The new revolutionary method for extinguishing lithium-ion battery fires in vehicles, which was developed in Sweden, has now successfully been tried on real EV-fires in both Norway and the Czech Republic.
With the arrival of electric vehicles (EVs) comes many different products to “solve” the problem of extinguishing a fire in an EV’s high-voltage battery. While there may be a few benefits to some of these products, overall, most fail to address the problem associated with a thermal runaway event in a large lithium-ion battery.
While they are called lithium-ion battery cells, the cells do not contain solid lithium metal, making the extinguisher ineffective. There is also no easy way to get the powder from the extinguisher directly to the cells on fire due to the construction of the box and the speed at which the battery cells fail.
Effective extinguishing agents for lithium-ion battery fires are an active area of r&d, and exploit many materials, usually combined with water. Several of these have come to light recently. One of them is brine, which is water with a salt such as sodium chloride dissolved in it in a concentration between 5% and the saturation point of about 26%.
A new fire protection method for dealing with electric vehicle fires is proposed. The fire extinguishing performance of the method is evaluated by full-scale fire tests. An interesting thermal runaway propagation mechanism is found in full-size lithium-ion battery packs.
Investigated fire extinguishing methods The fire brigade wished to investigate different methods of fighting battery electric vehicle fires. The standard approach is the application of water to cool down the vehicle and to control the fire and temperature situation inside the tunnel.
