The desert vegetation in the deployment area of PV power stations presented a significant greening trend. Compared to 2010, the greening area reached 30.80 km 2, accounting for 30% of the total area of PV power stations.
PV-induced climate effects could contribute to improving ecological conditions in Gobi Deserts. In this study, a promising photovoltaic (PV) deployment scenario is firstly designed to represent China’s solar energy development in the context of its dual carbon target.
From 2011 to 2018, the greening area within the range of PV power stations increased to 30.8 km 2 substantially, with the largest greening area in 2016 (31.9 km 2). For most deserts, the degradation area is negligible compared to the greening area.
Overall, the greening area of all deserts is much larger than the degradation area, indicating an overall greening trend of desert vegetation after the PV power stations deployment. From 2011 to 2018, the greening area within the range of PV power stations increased to 30.8 km 2 substantially, with the largest greening area in 2016 (31.9 km 2).
PV plants in China’s northwestern Gobi Deserts would favor lower evaporation and wind. Local climate effects of PV plants are equivalent to or even greater than projected climate variability. PV-induced climate effects could contribute to improving ecological conditions in Gobi Deserts.
More than 60% of China’s PV resources and development capabilities are concentrated in the deserts (Xinhua News Agency, 2021), together with the flat terrain, low population density, and limited land expenditure costs, which making the deserts ideal for the growth of large-scale PV farms (Xiao et al., 2011; Wu et al., 2014; Tanner et al., 2020).
