The Standard covers a comprehensive review of energy storage systems, covering charging and discharging, protection, control, communication between devices, fluids movement and other aspects.
UL Solutions, also known as Underwriters Laboratories, developed UL 9540 – Energy Storage Systems and Equipment. The standard covers energy storage systems (ESS) that supply electrical energy to local electric power systems (EPS). In particular, the standard aims to assess how safe and compatible each integrated part of an energy storage system is.
The global regulatory environment surrounding the legislation of external power supply eficiency and no-load power draw has rapidly evolved over the past decade since the California Energy Commission (CEC) implemented the first mandatory standard in 2004.
However, there are diferences in how the DoE and EU define external power supplies and the scope of which classes of supply are included or exempt from these rules. Regulated products now include: nameplate output voltage less than 6 volts and nameplate output current greater than or equal to 550 milliamps.
The European Union published its Code of Conduct (CoC) on Energy Eficiency of External Power Supplies Version 5 in October 2013. Tier 1 efectively harmonizes the EU with DoE Level VI, noting the diferences in scope detailed below, and became efective as a voluntary requirement from January 2014, some two years ahead of DoE Level VI.
