Although electric machines can provide a constant maximum torque from zero to the rated speed, the efficiency of the motor is lower for low torque and low speed operation; so, introducing the dual-motor coupling powertrain system into BEVs may allow operation in a more efficient area by utilizing only one of two motors in low-load conditions.
To better describe the dual-motor coupling system, a graph should be able to express the relationships among the components, such as electric machines, coupling mechanisms (gear pairs, planetary gear sets), switching/locking devices (clutches, synchronizers, brakes), and output shaft coupling to the vehicle wheels.
Dual-motor coupling powertrain (DMCP) systems use two motors to realize multiple drive modes and utilize various mechanical coupling mechanisms to properly distribute the power of the two motors and improve the utilization rate of the motor, which can have a higher overall efficiency than the BEVs equipped with single-motor drive powertrain [5, 6].
