In the charging process we have to pass a charging current through the cell in the opposite direction to that of the discharging current. The electrical energy is stored in the form of chemical form, when the charging current is passed. lead acid battery cells are capable of producing a large amount of energy.
The next phase of discharging is in the bulk or main part of the discharge. During this phase, most of the energy of the battery is discharged. For a lead acid battery, this happens in a relatively linear manner, with the voltage dropping in proportion to the Depth of Discharge, or inversely proportional to the State of Charge.
The factor limiting the charging speed of lead–acid batteries is often the dissolution of the sulphate crystals in the negative active mass. This greater resistance means that the cell reaches the constant-voltage stage at a lower state of charge. As such, the cell needs longer in the constant-voltage stage to reach a full state of charge.
Test show that a heathy lead acid battery can be charged at up to 1.5C as long as the current is moderated towards a full charge when the battery reaches about 2.3V/cell (14.0V with 6 cells). Charge acceptance is highest when SoC is low and diminishes as the battery fills.
A plug is inserted which is linked to the lead-acid battery and the chemical reaction proceeds in the opposite direction. In cases where the sulphuric acid in the battery (or some other component of the battery) has undergone decomposition, the charging process may become inefficient. Therefore, it is advisable to check the battery periodically.
The lifetime of a Lead acid battery is generally determined by the number of cycles that it can go through before serious capacity degradation occurs. The number of cycles that the battery can go through is also dependent upon the Depth of Discharge (DOD).

The lead acid battery uses lead as the anode and lead dioxide as the cathode, with an acid electrolyte. The following half-cell reactions take place inside the cell during discharge: At the anode: Pb + HSO 4 – → PbSO 4 + H + + 2e – At the cathode: PbO 2 + 3H + + HSO 4 – + 2e – → PbSO 4 + 2H 2 O. Overall: Pb + PbO 2 +2H 2 SO 4 → 2PbSO 4 + 2H 2 O. During the …

Over-discharging leads to excessive sulfation and the battery could be ruined. The chemical reactions become irreversible when the size of the lead-sulfate formations become too large. Increased charging rate (current) is desirable to reduce charging time.
It infers that when the lead-acid battery completes 1157 cycles, there is 1 % chance that the lead-acid battery fails. In other words, from a given lot of lead-acid batteries, 1 % batteries will fail at 1157 cycles, indicating an early failure. Furthermore, 5 % lead-acid batteries fail (B5 life) at 1173 cycles, and 10 % lead-acid batteries fails (B10 life) at 1187 cycles. The …
