The drying process of lithium-ion battery electrodes is one of the key processes for manufacturing electrodes with high surface homogeneity and is one of the most energy-consuming stages. The choice of the drying parameters has a significant impact on the electrode properties and the production efficiency.

How do you dry battery electrodes?

The starting point for drying battery electrodes on an industrial scale is a wet film of particulate solvent dispersions, which are applied to a current collector foil by slot-die coating. Conventional convective drying removes the solvent from the wet film and solidifies the layer as the drying time progresses ( Figure 1 ).

Can lithium batteries be dried?

In the study of drying techniques for lithium batteries, the key point is the relationship between the amount of electrode dewatering and various dominant factors during drying.

What happens during the drying process?

Jaiser et al. divide the drying process into two different phases. During the first phase, the evaporation of the solvent leads to a shrinkage of the coated layer, the second starts once this shrinkage stops and the solvent is evaporated by capillary transport. The latter phase is mainly responsible for the binder migration. [ 15 ]

What are the mechanisms of Lib electrode drying?

In summary, the key mechanisms to consider in models of LIB electrode drying are the consolidation of the active parti-cles, the convection/evaporation of the solvent, the advection and difusion of inactive material (both the binder and con-ductive additives), and the development of stress/cracking.

Specifically, the drying time of the electrode under the drying condition of 363.15 K is reduced by 10 s compared to the condition of 353.15 K, and it differs by only 5 s compared to the condition of 373.15 K. However, as the temperature continues to increase, the degree of reduction in drying time becomes less significant.
