Chen et al. developed a comprehensive solar resource assessment system based on the GIS + MCDM method in 2019. This system was applied to the assessment of the potential of PV power generation in the countries under the “Belt and Road” initiative. The results showed that the PV potential of China is 100.8 PWh.
The major solar power technology currently available is the solar PV system, in which sunlight is directly converted into electricity via photovoltaic effect. The PV industry in China entered its period of rapid development during the 21st century because of the significant increase in global demand for PV products.
In order to develop economically by sustaining its own energy demand without harming the environment, the Chinese government has the incentive to support the development of solar power generation. China started research on solar cells in 1958, which were first applied on the satellite Dongfanghong no. 2 in 1971.
China has already made major commitments to transitioning its energy systems towards renewables, especially power generation from solar, wind and hydro sources. However, there are many unknowns about the future of solar energy in China, including its cost, technical feasibility and grid compatibility in the coming decades.
Fig. 2. Spatial distribution of annual theoretical power generation of China in 2015. The results of theoretical PV power generation show that the high-value areas are mainly concentrated in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, followed by Northwest China and Yunnan, where are rich in solar radiation resources.
The results showed that the average suitability score of land in China is 0.1058 and the suitable land for PV power generation is about 993,000 km2 in 2015. The PV power generation potential of China is 131.942 PWh, which is approximately 23 times the electricity demand of China in 2015.

Besides, combining different resources improves''s moothness'' in power output when compared with each individual resource. Liu, et al. [76] concluded that scenery complementarity could improve the stability of wind and solar power generation. Additionally, single and mixed wind/solar power generation stability increases with the total area.
This would account for more than a quarter of China''s total power generation capacity, it said. According to global consultancy Rystad Energy, China''s solar sector is set to break records in the coming years, with total installed solar PV capacity expected to cross the 1,000 GW mark by the end of 2026. Rystad Energy expects 255 GW of new solar PV …
To estimate the grid parity of China''s PV power generation, as shown in Fig. 12, the future cost of PV power generation in five cities is forecast based on the predicted PV installed capacity from 2015 to 2050 and the learning curve equations (Table 5). 2 From a perspective of technological innovation, market diffusion of PV technologies can be divided into three stages, …
