The layered oxide cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are essential to realize their high energy density and competitive position in the energy storage market. However, further advancements of current cathode materials are always suffering from the burdened cost and sustainability due to the use of cobalt or nickel elements.

Here, some of the computational approaches to studying Li-ion batteries, with special focus on issues related to layered materials, are discussed.
