MIT researchers discovered that when water droplets gain electric charge during spontaneous jumping away from superhydrophobic surfaces during condensation, they can generate small amounts of electricity. Last year, the same team demonstrated that this process might be used to power electronic devices.
Jumping water droplets gain a small electric charge because they become attracted to a nearby metal plate with an opposite charge. This discovery suggests that the jumping process, along with the transfer of heat, could be enhanced by using an electric field.
As water droplets jump and carry a charge from one plate to the other, they can generate a charge difference that can be harnessed to provide power if the two plates are connected through an external circuit. In a practical device, two arrays of metal plates, like fins on a radiator, would be interleaved, so that they are very close but not touching.
We investigate the charge separation caused by the motion of a water drop across a hydrophobic, insulating solid surface. Although the phenomenon of liquid charging has been consistently reported, these reports are primarily observational, results are difficult to reproduce, and no quantitative theory has been developed.
Given that nearly every surface in our lives comes in contact with water, this water-dependent surface charging may be a ubiquitous process that we can begin to understand through the proposed theory. A) Charge of the first four drops and Q N versus sliding distance.
As an experimental system, we choose water drops moving down an inclined plane of glass hydrophobized with perfluoro octadecyltrichlorosilane (PFOTS). On this surface, sliding drops gain a positive charge. We observe charge saturation in three variables: increasing drop number, increasing interval between drops, and increasing drop-sliding length.
