Unfortunately, a small but significant fraction of these systems has experienced field failures resulting in both fires and explosions. A comprehensive review of these issues has been published in the EPRI Battery Storage Fire Safety Roadmap (report 3002022540 ), highlighting the need for specific eforts around explosion hazard mitigation.
When a fire occurs in the LIB pack stored in the energy storage container, the smoke generated by the fire source spreads upwards as the mass flow rate of the fire plume increases and due to buoyancy. Upon reaching the ceiling, the smoke disperses radially, then descends vertically.
Preliminary research at the accident site and related reports , inferred that the ignition and explosion process of the accident is as follows: a short-circuit failure of lithium iron phosphate batteries in the battery room of south building, triggering a thermal runaway battery fire.
In addition, the release of high-temperature flammable gases inside the battery can create the risk of gas cloud explosion after diffusion to an oxygen-sufficient environment and reaching the explosion limit, further expanding the impact of the accident .
In the case of the Gunwi ESS fire, the upper limit was raised from 70% to 95%, five days before the fire. Additionally, in violation of government guidelines regarding the upper limit of SOC, the Hadong and Gimhae fires occurred at SOCs of 95%. Table 3.
