Energy is stored by compressing large powerful coil springs that are attached to the contact assembly of a circuit breaker. Once these springs are compressed, the latch may be operated to release the springs, and spring pressure will shut the circuit breaker.
The low-voltage power circuit breaker (LVPCB) (Fig. 2) has a two-step stored energy mechanism. This type of mechanism uses an energy storage device, such as a spring, that is “charged” and then released, or “discharged,” to close the circuit breaker. The LVPCB is older technology.
When a large air circuit breaker is closed, the operating mechanism is latched. As the circuit breaker is closed, a set of tripping springs, or coils, are compressed, and the circuit breaker may then be tripped by means of a trip latch. The trip latch mechanism may be operated either manually or remotely by means of a solenoid trip coil.
Tripping Time: Circuit breaker tripping time is the period from the activation of the trip coil to the final open position. Reliability and Speed: Circuit breakers must operate reliably and quickly to prevent damage and ensure safety.
Opening time of the breaker — the interval from the time of energizing the opening release (the circuit breaker being in the closed position), to the moment the contacts separate at all the poles. Worth noting is the time discrepancy between the contacts of the breaker. This should be within specified tolerance limits—usually 5 ms.
Typically, the heating or magnetic effects of electric current are employed. Circuit breakers for large currents or high voltages are usually arranged with protective relay pilot devices to sense a fault condition and to operate the opening mechanism.
At what amperage is a breaker designed to trip at?
The average breaker is designed as an ''inverse-time'' breaker. Meaning, it may take hours or even days for a 20a breaker running at 21 or 22 amps to trip, but seconds when there''s 50 or 60 amps coursing through it.

Power circuit breaker ratings explained
tests and ratings of the low-voltage power circuit breakers (LVPCBs) that are used in the switchgear assembly. For example, the short-time current rating of the switchgear corresponds directly to the rated short-time current testing requirement for unfused power circuit breakers in ANSI C37.50 – 2018, reference clause 3.10.1. [3] The rated short-time current in LVPCBs is a …

Things Beginners Need to Know Before Replacing a Circuit Breaker
In order to replace a common household circuit breaker that is housed in a regular 2-pole main breaker with branch circuit compartments, you would first turn off all of the branch circuit breakers and then the main circuit breaker. Never assume the breakers are off; you need to check for voltage on adjacent breakers to make sure the breaker panel is dead.
