The new standard for battery safety also deals primarily with “thermal accidents”. Among other things, it specifies that the thermal passage of a cell for five minutes must not cause a fire or explosion of the vehicle. This should give the occupants sufficient time to leave the vehicle.

Scope of a standard Standards for EVs have different scopes such as those addressing: (1) the energy system itself; (2) the application of the batteries, that is, the EV system; (3) the interfaces between the EV and power grids; and (4) the infrastructure.
The standards, which have been approved by the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration and the National Standardization Management Committee will be implemented from January 1, 2021. The three standards are the first compulsory national standards in the field of electric vehicles in China.
