The EU solar energy strategy proposed under the REPowerEU plan aims to make solar energy a cornerstone of the EU energy system. Boosting renewable energy is also an important part of the European Green Deal in the context of the green transition towards climate neutrality.
According to our market outlook, 670 GW of solar PV will be deployed in Europe by 2030 but up to 1 TW can be deployed with the right framework.
For the first time, more than a quarter of EU electricity (27%) was provided by wind and solar in 2023, up from 23% in 2022. This drove renewable electricity to a record high of 44%, passing the 40% mark for the first year in the EU’s history. Combined wind and solar generation increased by a record 90 TWh and installed capacity by 73 GW.
We identified grid planning and connection practices as impactful steps that can be taken immediately. The report entails an analysis of challenges to grid integration of solar PV in the EU, including an assessment of current grid planning and connection practices across Europe, presented in graphical maps and tables.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in 2021 the estimated installed solar PV capacity in the EU was over 158 GW, compared with over 306 GW in China and almost 94 GW in the US. China is currently the world's leader in solar energy production.
