Energy storage technologies have the potential to reduce energy waste, ensure reliable energy access, and build a more balanced energy system. Over the last few decades, advancements in efficiency, cost, and capacity have made electrical and mechanical energy storage devices more affordable and accessible.
For energy storage technologies to be used more widely by commercial and residential consumers, research should focus on making them more scalable and affordable. Energy storage is a crucial component of the global energy system, necessary for maintaining energy security and enabling a steadfast supply of energy.
For enormous scale power and highly energetic storage applications, such as bulk energy, auxiliary, and transmission infrastructure services, pumped hydro storage and compressed air energy storage are currently suitable.
It is important to compare the capacity, storage and discharge times, maximum number of cycles, energy density, and efficiency of each type of energy storage system while choosing for implementation of these technologies. SHS and LHS have the lowest energy storage capacities, while PHES has the largest.
New materials and compounds are being explored for sodium ion, potassium ion, and magnesium ion batteries, to increase energy storage capabilities. Additional development methods, such as additive manufacturing and nanotechnology, are expected to reduce costs and accelerate market penetration of energy storage devices.
Battery, flywheel energy storage, super capacitor, and superconducting magnetic energy storage are technically feasible for use in distribution networks. With an energy density of 620 kWh/m3, Li-ion batteries appear to be highly capable technologies for enhanced energy storage implementation in the built environment.
