Much of the attraction to sodium (Na) batteries as candidates for large-scale energy storage stems from the fact that as the sixth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust and the fourth most abundant element in the ocean, it is an inexpensive and globally accessible commodity.
Sodium-ion batteries (NaIBs) were initially developed at roughly the same time as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in the 1980s; however, the limitations of charge/discharge rate, cyclability, energy density, and stable voltage profiles made them historically less competitive than their lithium-based counterparts .
Timely support to improve supply chain issues could prove to be particularly relevant to domestic supply chains associated with Na batteries, where the United States may have a unique strategic interest in supply chain development.
Education and Awareness One of the other keys to advancing Na battery domestic development and manufacturing and improving Na battery selection/acceptance by end-users is to increase community awareness of Na battery technologies.
