The bionic battery cooling plate from MAHLE works so efficiently that the temperature range can be reduced by 50 percent and peak temperatures in particular can be significantly lowered. In this way, the Group makes a major contribution to the service life and performance of the expensive battery.
Bionics is an interdiscipline between biology and engineering technology [ 16 ]. The purpose of bionics is to understand the principles of natural design and draw technical solutions [ 17, 18 ]. Nature has existed for billions of years.
Engineers at MAHLE have now developed a bionic structure for cooling channels, inspired by nature. This structure allows for a different flow of cooling fluid, significantly enhancing the performance and characteristics of the cooling plate. You might think that technology in and around automobiles has already been pushed to its limits.
In addition, its service life is increased. On top of this, MAHLE has reduced the amount of material used for the plate by up to 15 percent, thus saving 15 percent CO 2. MAHLE will present its new bionic battery cooling plate to the public for the first time at the IAA Mobility.
This significantly contributes to the longevity and performance of the expensive battery. Furthermore, MAHLE has reduced the material usage for the bionic plate by up to 15 percent, saving 15 percent in CO2 emissions compared to conventionally flowed plates.
In this paper, a microchannel liquid cooling plate with a bionic vascular structure is designed, and the heat dissipation model of the liquid cooling plate is established and simulated by using Fluent software.
