For all coils except flipper coils, cut the diode off the coil before installing. Then solder the coil wires to either coil lug. The diode can also be left in place, but the coil wires must be installed correctly. The green (ground) wire MUST go to the lug of the coil with the non-banded side of the diode.
Connect a 9 volt battery to one of the primary coil pins with an alligator clip, and to the other primary coil pin, connect an alligator clip. Don't connect this alligator clip to the battery yet. Take fat the red wire, and with the suction cup removed and the end stripped, place it close to one of the unused pins.
In summary, It is not difficult to wire an ignition system/diagram. First, connect the positive terminal of the ignition coil to a 12V battery and the negative terminal (of the ignition coil) to the switching unit and then to the ground. Next, connect the output section of the ignition coil to the spark plug.
Using the "Tesla Coil": Turn the switch on, and with a grounded wire attached, plasma discharges will leave the top load. Because the discharges are low amperage, they are difficult to see in the light. In a dark room, once your eyes adjust, they are visible as white, mini lightning bolts.
They can be used on a positive or a negative grounded battery system, meaning that they will work with either type of grounded system. What mainly matters is that you always use the correct voltage coil for the application. Beyond that, properly attaching the two terminal (+) & (-) coil connections is the next issue for many folks.
If you have a test light clip the lead to a good ground on the block and hold the probe on the coil's negative post while cranking the engine over. The light should flash if the points are working. You must log in or register to reply here. Coil arcing between coil and coil wires. A lot of fellas have asked me this question over the years.
running ignition coil directly off battery
Can I ask how you plan to start and stop the ignition without a switch? Wiring direct to the battery will put 12-14v''s into the coil at all times. Once the engine is running it will stay running until that voltage is removed... I think …
How to Wire An Ignition Coil Diagram (Types & Wiring Guides)
First, connect the positive terminal of the ignition coil to a 12V battery and the negative terminal (of the ignition coil) to the switching unit and then to the ground. Next, connect the output section of the ignition coil to the spark plug. Finally, link the body of the spark plug to the +12 volts (for a -30kW spark plug), and then to the ground.

Note that they are directional. The negative side ...
How to Wire a 12 Volt Ignition Coil: The Ultimate Guide
Igniting the spark in your engine is crucial for its smooth operation. The ignition coil plays a vital role in this process, transforming low voltage from your car''s battery into high voltage needed to fire the spark plugs. This guide will walk you through the process of how to wire a 12 volt ignition coil, ensuring you have a clear understanding of the steps involved.
How to Test Primary & Secondary Ignition Coil Circuits
Connect one terminal to the positive side of the coil, and the other terminal to the negative side. Take the reading from the meter. The reading should be between one and four ohms, depending on the type of coil and the vehicle from which it came. The higher energy the coil, the lower the primary resistance will be.

The Complete Guide to 5 Pin CDI Wiring Diagrams
Pickup Coil – As the flywheel magnet passes the pickup coil, it generates a small AC voltage. This signal tells the CDI box when to fire the spark plug.; Ignition Coil – Steps up the voltage from the CDI box to the very high levels needed to jump the spark plug gap and ignite the mixture.; Now let''s look at the specifics of the 5 pin CDI wiring harness and diagrams.
