This presentation discusses AC filter capacitors used in inverter outputs. Notably the presentation concentrates on the use of metallized polypropylene capacitors of dry construction. Oil filled capacitors dominate these applications in the higher voltage and power markets generally in front-end filtering and power factor correction.
This paper will focus on three main capacitor types used in higher-power inverter applications: snapmount, plug-in, and screw-terminal capacitors. See Figure 2 below and Table 1 on page 3. Small snap-in’s and radials are often used in the 100-1000 W range, and larger snapmount capacitors and snap-in farms are used in the 1-20 kW range.
L filters play a role as a first order low-pass filter (LPF) to attenuate the harmonics of grid-side current. To limit TDD (%) of grid-side current below 5%, a quite large amount of filter inductance is required, which increases volume and weight of the inverter systems and makes the output dynamics of the inverter poor .
The output filter capacitors must filter the entire spectrum from fundamental to harmonic frequencies. Metallized polypropylene has low loses across a wide bandwidth of frequencies making it the premier choice for filtering inverter outputs.
Oil filled capacitors dominate these applications in the higher voltage and power markets generally in front-end filtering and power factor correction. However, the use of dry capacitors for inverter output filtering has increased in the medium voltage filters over the last ten years.
