The interest in developing lithium deposits in the Western Balkans is part of a wider push to exploit the mineral across Europe. According to the latest report by the US Geological Survey, Serbia’s lithium accounts for only 1.3% of the world total, compared with 23.5% in Bolivia, 21% in Argentina and 3% in Germany (3).
The transition to electric and hybrid vehicles is making lithium ion batteries a strategic technology, as other available solutions are still in their infancy. The administration in Brussels is counting on the countries that it sees as reliable to provide the critical materials for the energy transition.
The businessman didn’t disclose the specific area the new vehicle plans to target, but according to local media there are lithium reserves in the Jadra area, near the border with Serbia, as well as around Ugljevik, Domaljevac and Samac, in central Bosnia.
