The development and production of batteries has become a strategic imperative for the EU, enabling the clean energy transition and as a key component of the competitiveness of the automotive sector. To help the EU become a global leader in sustainable battery production and use, in 2018 the Commission published a strategic action plan on batteries.
These include tripling global renewable energy capacity, doubling the pace of energy efficiency improvements and transitioning away from fossil fuels. This special report brings together the latest data and information on batteries from around the world, including recent market developments and technological advances.
Keyword analysis shows that the research focus has shifted from lead-acid batteries to the more advantageous lithium batteries. Supply chain research related to NEV battery recycling has also been emphasized. The closed-loop supply chain and circular economy of NEV batteries have received considerable attention in recent years.
The fact that a technological roadmap is not systematically used as one of the criteria for the awarding of EU funding to battery projects is detrimental to the EU’s R&I effort because it increases the risk of gaps and overlaps in the research work conducted by different stakeholders at EU level.
