The disassembly of the battery is a key factor in the implementation of viable end-of-life strategies, as it is not only necessary for repurposing and remanufacturing but also essential as a preparatory step for high quality and efficient recycling processes ( Glöser-Chahoud et al., 2021 ).
Battery disassembly also prepares for subsequent recycling processes. In addition to the active material obtained via chemical processes for extraction, components such as the Al casing, Cu foil, separator, and current collector are also candidates for reuse via the disassembly process .
They found that manual disassembly of standard battery modules typically takes an average of 40–60 min and is associated with high labor costs. Consequently, a growing preference has been observed for more efficient mechanically assisted or automated disassembly.
The electronic clamp introduced by Schmitt et al. in 2011 and the robotic arm proposed by Wegner et al. for production lines enabled the semiautomatic disassembly of batteries.
The main recycling option is hydrometallurgical, which is normally accompanied by a pre-processing method that can be either mechanical, such as crushing or cutting of the battery components, or a pyrometallurgical method with a melting or pyrolysis process of the battery elements ( Kotak et al., 2021 ).
The industrial disassembling of End-of-Life (EOL) batteries is especially realistic if the OEM, with its knowledge of the battery system and the ability to modify design, is involved in EoL battery treatment. This process can lead to the utilization of different components.
