Part of the book series: Green Energy and Technology ( (GREEN)) Current voltage ( I-V) characteristic of illuminated photovoltaic (PV) cell varies with temperature changes. The effect is explained according to the physical theory of solids. The higher the temperature, the lower the open-circuit voltage and the higher the short-circuit current.
The intersections of curves with the vertical axis give short-circuit currents corresponding to "zero" resistance in the external circuit (or, in other words, to the short-circuiting of both poles of the PV cell). If circuit load increases, we move from these points along the curves in the direction of the increasing voltage (to the right).
This reduces the efficiency of the PV panel. In addition, different current densities flow through the individual PV cells inside the PV panel, the PV cells are heated unevenly and thus the degradation of the PV panel is accelerated. Deterioration of the PV panel parameters will also be reflected in changes in the volt-ampere characteristic.
If the temperature increases, the Fermi energy level is shifted towards the centre of the forbidden gap and the gap narrows, as shown in Fig. 10. It is clear from the Figs. 4c and 10, the increasing temperature causes reduction in the photovoltaic voltage Vp at the constant irradiation intensity.
If we connect an illuminated PV cell to an electric circuit, the conductive connection of both poles causes the photovoltaic voltage (of the electromotive force of the source) to decrease. This in turn causes a change in the bending of bands, so that the potential barrier VD -VP increases again.
Volt ampere characteristics When the input light intensity of silicon photocell is constant, the relationship between the output voltage and current of the photocell along with the change of load resistance is called the volt ampere characteristic. Load characteristics The photocell is used as a battery, as shown in figure 3.
