In 2019, EPRI began the Battery Energy Storage Fire Prevention and Mitigation – Phase I research project, convened a group of experts, and conducted a series of energy storage site surveys and industry workshops to identify critical research and development (R&D) needs regarding battery safety.
The National Fire Protection Association NFPA 855 Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems provides the minimum requirements for mitigating hazards associated with ESS of diferent battery types. The standard applies to Li-ion battery systems with a total capacity higher than 20 kWh within the potential fire area.
Depending on the case, the ESS shall comply with all applicable performance requirements in the standard with and/or without the fire detection and fire suppression equipment in place and operational. The guidance on capacity and separation distance limits given in Appendix E are aligned with those of NFPA 855 as given in Table 3.
