While we still tend to think of lithium-ion batteries as a component of consumer electronics like phones and laptops, the tech is playing an increasingly huge part in the energy sector - which now accounts for over 90 per cent of overall battery demand. In 2023 alone, battery deployment in the power sector increased by more than 130 per cent.
In a report by Research Nester, analysts estimate that the global battery market will expand at a CAGR of 10% over the forecast period of 2022 to 2030. The world is also moving to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. And storage solutions are increasingly important for them.
In the rest of the world, battery demand growth jumped to more than 70% in 2023 compared to 2022, as a result of increasing EV sales. In China, PHEVs accounted for about one-third of total electric car sales in 2023 and 18% of battery demand, up from one-quarter of total sales in 2022 and 17% of sales in 2021.
The total volume of batteries used in the energy sector was over 2 400 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2023, a fourfold increase from 2020. In the past five years, over 2 000 GWh of lithium-ion battery capacity has been added worldwide, powering 40 million electric vehicles and thousands of battery storage projects.
The battery market is experiencing significant growth due to the increasing demand for batteries in various emerging applications. Batteries are widely used in consumer electronics such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, and wearable devices. These batteries allow to use of such devices anywhere without having to keep an eye on battery life.
While the supply of both battery scrap and retired EVs will increase, current expansion plans and outlooks suggest that battery recycling capacity could be in significant overcapacity in 2030: total supply in 2030 could account for only one-third of the announced recycling capacity in the STEPS and APS.

Tesla, for instance, uses NCA batteries, in part because they have high energy density, meaning the batteries are smaller and lighter than others that can store the same amount of energy. [62] In contrast, LFP batteries represent an older battery chemistry, which tends to cost less, have a longer life cycle, and be safer when it comes to the possibility of catching fire.
A new platform for energy storage. Although the batteries don''t quite reach the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, Varanasi says Alsym is first among alternative chemistries at the system-level. He says 20-foot containers …
Demand for EV batteries reached more than 750 GWh in 2023, up 40% relative to 2022, though the annual growth rate slowed slightly compared to in 2021‑2022. Electric cars account for 95% of this growth.
particularly the development of batteries. Chinese battery manufacturers are leading the global EV battery market now, with the lion''s share of the market (Figure 6). In 2022 China sold 60% of batteries in the world. With the increasing demand for EVs, Chinese manufacturers have been investing heavily in the development of EV battery
