By the end of June, the total number of charging piles in China reached 10.24 million units, an increase of 54 percent year on year, Zhang Xing, a spokesperson for the National Energy Administration (NEA) told a press conference Wednesday.
In 2021, the number of public charging piles in China will reach 2.617 million, a year-on-year increase of 224.3%, serving nearly 8 million new energy vehicles. With the large-scale popularization of new energy vehicles and strong policy support, the scale of China’s charging pile industry has grown rapidly.
China has been expanding charging facilities for electric vehicles in recent years, buoyed by the burgeoning market. Sales of the country's new-energy vehicles at the home market jumped 31.7 percent year on year to 7.21 million units in the first 11 months of the year, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed.
These facilities have met the charging needs of 24 million new energy vehicles across the country, Zhang added. During the period, the country's new energy vehicles have consumed a total of 51.3 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, expanding 40 percent over the same period last year, according to Zhang.
From January to August, China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales amounted to 5.37 million units, which is 2.7 times the number of new charging infrastructure. The construction of charging infrastructure can basically meet the rapid development of NEVs, the EVCIPA said.
According to the Chinese government's 14th five-year plan, an advanced charging infrastructure system will be in place by the end of 2025 to meet the demand for more than 20 million electric vehicles.
