Strong growth in lithium-ion battery (LIB) demand requires a robust understanding of both costs and environmental impacts across the value-chain. Recent announcements of LIB manufacturers to venture into cathode active material (CAM) synthesis and recycling expands the process segments under their influence.
Estimates see annual LIB demand grow to between 1200 and 3500 GWh by 2030 [3, 4]. To meet a growing demand, companies have outlined plans to ramp up global battery production capacity . The production of LIBs requires critical raw materials, such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and graphite.
The global demand for lithium-ion batteries is surging, a trend expected to continue for decades, driven by the wide adoption of electric vehicles and battery energy storage systems 1.
However, LIB refining and manufacturing are dominated by China. More than half of cobalt, graphite, and lithium refining capacity is situated in China and the country produces over 75% of all LIBs (16). Europe is responsible for ∼10% of global LIB manufacturing but is expected to increase its capacity to reach 25% by 2030.
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become one of the main energy storage solutions in modern society. The application fields and market share of LIBs have increased rapidly and continue to show a steady rising trend. The research on LIB materials has scored tremendous achievements.
Corresponding to the projected 33,800 GWh energy consumption in 2040, the calculated global greenhouse gas emissions from lithium-ion battery cell productions will be 8.19 million tonnes of CO 2 equivalent in 2040, similar to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of Afghanistan in 2020 5.

Expected to be operational from 2025, Verkor''s first gigafactory is planned to have an annual production capacity of 16 GWh in lithium-ion batteries – enough to fit-out around 300,000 electric vehicles. Verkor''s long-term agreement with Renault aims to see the car manufacturer take the majority of the initial volume for its larger and ...

Raw materials. Raw materials are the lifeblood of lithium-ion battery (LiB) localization. Securing a stable and domestic supply of essential elements such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, and other critical components is paramount to reducing dependence on imports and achieving self-sufficiency in LiB production.
The dependency of the industry on LiB cells and critical battery materials creates significant supply chain risks along the full value chain Overview LiB Cell Supply Chain (CAM/AAM only, example NCM chemistry) Mining Refining •Production and processing of natural resources •Long-term investment cycles, high required investment
While trends are clear in China, Europe, and the United States, several factors may affect the ongoing shift to L(M)FP batteries, including regulations and sunk investments. For instance, the United States introduced import tariffs on batteries in 2024, prompting a company to pause sales of vehicles with LFP batteries that were produced in ...
Stellantis and CATL today announced they have reached an agreement to invest up to €4.1 billion to form a joint venture that will build a large-scale European lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant in Zaragoza, Spain. Designed to be completely carbon neutral, the battery plant will be implemented in several phases and investment plans.
Europe can become self-sufficient in battery cells by 2026, and manufacture most of its demand for key components (cathodes) and materials such as lithium by 2030. But over half of gigafactory plans in Europe remain at risk of either being delayed or cancelled, down from close to two-thirds a year ago.
For electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries were presented as the best option, whereas sodium-batteries were frequently discussed as preferable to lithium in non-transport applications. As one ...
