To find promising alternatives to lithium batteries, it helps to consider what has made the lithium battery so popular in the first place. Some of the factors that make a good battery are lifespan, power, energy density, safety and affordability.
As a result of this demand, numerous lithium battery alternatives are in development that could shift the power balance for energy storage 一 given they are feasible, and more importantly, scalable.

While lithium is obviously the main element of a lithium-ion battery, there are other materials and metals in these batteries. Nickel and cobalt in particular have been used in many lithium-ion batteries, especially those in electric vehicles. Nickel is used to increase the energy density of the battery and cobalt is used to stabilize it, Lee said.
The technology faces several limitations that prevent it from serving as a lithium-ion battery alternative anytime soon. For example, existing cathode materials that work with lithium can’t be used for magnesium. And the use of an aqueous electrolyte puts a cap on the battery’s maximum voltage because water breaks down at higher voltages.
"Recycling a lithium-ion battery consumes more energy and resources than producing a new battery, explaining why only a small amount of lithium-ion batteries are recycled," says Aqsa Nazir, a postdoctoral research scholar at Florida International University's battery research laboratory.
