A lithium iron phosphate battery doesn't require being fully charged, but around 3.3 volts is the magic number for significant charging. If all you have available is 3.3 volts and you don't mind the loss in capacity, you could use it for charging.
A lithium ion battery is discharged approximately at 2.6 volts during the experiment. The battery was discharged at 2.5A rate, and the commentary includes the lithium ion results at the bottom of the page for comparison. As you can see, the iron phosphate results also show an increase in capacity with charge voltage, but there are some interesting differences.
Multiple lithium iron phosphate modules are wired in series and parallel to create a 2800 Ah 52 V battery module. Total battery capacity is 145.6 kWh. Note the large, solid tinned copper busbar connecting the modules together. This busbar is rated for 700 amps DC to accommodate the high currents generated in this 48 volt DC system.
The results with iron phosphate batteries also show an increase in capacity with charge voltage. However, charging starts at a lower voltage than lithium ion, with some charging starting as low as 3V.

The A series cells appear to contain some lithium cobalt mixed in with the iron phosphate because when they are charged to 4.2 volts, they have higher voltage at the beginning of the discharge, while others do not have any energy stored between 4.2V and 3.6V.
