According to some forecasts, at global and EU level, lead-acid technologies will still prevail in 2025 in terms of volume, but the lithium-ion market will become greater in terms of value from 2018 onwards. Between 2018 and 2030, global lead-acid battery demand may grow by a factor of around 1.1.
In December 2020, the Commission presented a proposal for a regulation on batteries and waste batteries. The proposal aims to strengthen the functioning of the internal market, promoting a circular economy and reducing the environmental and social impact throughout all stages of the battery life cycle.
10 December 2020 is geared towards modernising EU legislation on batteries in order to ensure the sustainability and competitiveness of EU battery value chains. The proposal is part of the European Green Deal and related initiatives, including the new circular economy action plan and the new industrial strategy.
The Batteries Regulation will begin applying from 18 February 2024 onwards. However, some articles will only begin to apply at a later stage. You can find the relevant provisions in Article 96. The Batteries Directive will be repealed with effect on 18 August 2025.
By 2030, the recovery levels should reach 95 % for cobalt, copper, lead and nickel, and 70 % for lithium; requirements relating to the operations of repurposing and remanufacturing for a second life of industrial and EV batteries; labelling and information requirements.
Batteries are a crucial element in the EU's transition to a climate-neutral economy. On 10 December 2020, the European Commission presented a proposal designed to modernise the EU's regulatory framework for batteries in order to secure the sustainability and competitiveness of battery value chains.
EU battery regulations: what do the new rules mean?
In 2021, all EU member states met the target recycling rate of 65% by weight for lead-acid batteries (both automotive and non-automotive). The Truth About Reviving Dead Batteries
If one of the intercell connectors fails ''open,'' the battery will no longer be able to carry any charge or discharge current. Actually, the 4-volt reading is artificial. If the voltage is measured under load, it will immediately drop to zero due to the open circuit condition. This is literally a ''one-in-a-million'' occurrence in the field, particularly after the batteries have been in ...
New EU battery regulation in force.
The new regulation imposes stricter rules on the importation and distribution of batteries containing lead, including sealed lead acid products. This change is part of an effort to create harmonized legislation for battery sustainability and safety across the EU.
